The Michael Phelps Story Mainstream Media Missed

A photo of Michael Phelps taking a bong hit has the media and internet in a frenzy over marijuana prohibition – at least marijuana prohibition pertaining to an Olympic hero. Those who support legalization say Phelps is an example that marijuana users make up a larger demographic than lazy couch potatoes. Those against legalization use Phelps as an example that marijuana is a growing problem that is now affecting our role models. Both sides of the argument are still missing an important part of the original story. Michael Phelps has a drinking problem.

According to sources from the original story, Phelps was at the University Of South Carolina in Columbia to visit a girl he was “secretly seeing”, but ended up “getting wasted every night” instead. References such as “slamming beers from the get-go” and “throwing back shots two at a time” are mentioned to describe Michaels drinking habits. When you tie these behaviors to someone who also had a very publicized underage DUI arrest in 2004, you would figure media outlets would be quick to cover this Olympic heros battle with alcoholism; but instead they choose to cover his “bad judgment” over hitting a bong.

Nice article, I also found the reporting of the phelps incident ridiculous. Also a shame he couldn’t step to the plate as a martyr for legalisation/de criminilization, let’s face it he seemed very comfortable with the glass wear. Good luck with the site, check us out..legalize/regulate

If Michael Phelps is into smoking pipes then good for him. Just because he enjoys smoking a glass pipe does not mean he should have to lie about it and talk about the “big mistake” he made. The government makes a mistake every time it enforces marijuana prohibition at the expense of America and good since. America should grow up and quit attacking its own citizens for how they decide to spend their recreational time.

With the advent of Prop 19 in the California election the issue of whether a person smokes a bit of marijuana from a bong will not be such a big deal here. In my opinion, drinking is far more harmful that some pot. I speak as the widow of a man who died this year from a failed liver from drinking nothing but beer his entire life. My husband also smoked pot to help himself eat, that is all he used it for. As far as I could see, the alcohol is far more harmful to the human organism.
