Couple Killed in Suspected Grow House Under Police Surveillance
Three men broke into a suspected grow house in Kerman, California then allegedly shot and killed a couple in their 60s. The house was under surveillance by drug investigators from the Sheriff’s Office at the time of the killings. A police lookout spotted the three men get out of a Chrysler 300 driven by a female and enter the house. Seconds later a frantic 911 call was made from a male in the home saying his wife had just been murdered. The police lookout then saw the suspects run from the house less than a minute after entering. Police chased the suspects car which later crashed into another vehicle and resulting in 4 arrests. Police are still looking for 19-year-old Jose Alfredo Reyes in connection with the killings.
Kerman police say the home had been under surveillance for weeks and a raid was planned pending a search warrant. It was unclear if the residents, identified as Gary and Sandra DeBartolo, had a medical marijuana card to grow the plants legally. Police later removed 48 marijuana plants and “thousands of dollars” worth of growing equipment from the home.
Neighbors in the small community say Sandra worked for 37 years as a secretary at the local high school and Gary owned a mobile glass repair shop. The couple had a 36-year-old son named Eric who police say also had marijuana plants growing in his home. Police have said they detained and released Eric but it was unclear if he is being considered a suspect. Local news outlets have reported that neighbors saw the same suspect vehicle, a Chrysler 300 with chrome rims, parked in front Eric’s house days before the murders.
