Cannabis Cup Attendees Detained At Philly Airport

cancupWhile most of us were enjoying our Thanksgiving festivities, some people were really enjoying the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam which concluded on Thanksgiving Day (List of winners). According to U.S Customs officers, many patrons returning to Philadelphia International Airport enjoyed the cup so much they decided to return with some souvenirs. 1,850 pieces of souvenirs, including rolling papers and one-hitters.

Two people were also detained for concealing marijuana in their underwear (possibly following this guy’s advice) after customs K9 units tipped officers off to the marijuana.

In all, three people were fined $500 for stashing marijuana but were not charged criminally due to the small amounts they were caught with (less than 20 grams total).

You can add San Francisco International to the list of airports which were actively trying to intercept Cannabis Cup judges and attendees. Note to all who make the annual trip to Amsterdam: You need to FULLY empty your pockets of all cannabis, hash and all SHAKE that may be deposited at the bottom of your pockets before coming back to the States. At SFO, officers were accumulating all of the shake onto paper, which they in turn drug-tested. If they can score a positive and still have enough evidence to show to a judge, then they will proceed to a very detailed frisk. This entails actually grabbing your groin from all angles, while another officer pins your hands to a table — and even sticking their finger up into your ass through your clothing. It’s really pretty disgusting. And of course, they perform this anal penetration after pretending to be your friend for a half hour. I don’t know that the cops who have been enlisted to perform these acts are actually guilty of anything other than being misinformed about the effects of marijuana. So long as we continue to train police officers and customs officials of the “dangers” of marijuana use and the lack of medical benefit associated with marijuana use, we should expect to see more of this as they become increasingly desperate to do their job in the face of public opposition. I recommend that Cannabis Cup attendees bring books about the medical value of marijuana with them to hand to customs officials. As they’re going through your stuff, tell them: “This book is for you, because it appears that your superiors are misleading you on the dangers of marijuana.”

It is better NEVER to fly directly to the US from Amsterdam. Take an inexpensive train to Hamburg or Brussels. Amsterdam triggers custom’s interest right away. You will be more likely to get away with bringing in ‘souvenirs’ from your vacation in a country that is civilized enough to allow its citizens to indulge in a HARMLESS pastime.
